An underground sporting facility
The UTS Multi-Purpose Sports Hall is an underground sporting facility built below an existing grassed and paved area within UTS grounds. The sports hall incorporates a basketball court, change rooms & locker rooms, administration offices, gymnasium and a dance studio. An atrium at one end allows natural light and the development of a sunken garden landscaped area.
Through the course of the project’s construction approximately 14500m3 of sandstone was excavated and over 2300m3 of concrete was used on the structure
The design features of the sports hall are the coffered concrete soffit, the Y shaped structural columns standing 8 metres high that support the roof and the exposed sandstone rock faces.
Construction commenced on the Multi-Purpose Sports Hall on January 18, 2010. The project was successfully completed on time with Practical Completion awarded on 13/4/11.
