The Abbotsleigh School Team has hosted its third Women in Construction Student Engagement Workshop in collaboration with TTW. This time, the workshop focused on structural engineering.
A presentation by TTW structural engineers (Charlen Li, Nishmin Hallam and Cindy Chen) outlined the different engineering disciplines before providing an in-depth review of structural engineering, 3D modelling, calculations, educational pathways to becoming an engineer, and examples of a wide range of projects TTW has undertaken the design for (including examples at Abbotsleigh).
The presentation was then followed by a site walk to all levels of the building to review the structural concrete slabs, columns, K-bracing, stairs, and structural steel roof system.
The walk concluded with the students signing their names on a level 1 column. Planning for the fourth student engagement workshop is now underway with the school. Lipman and Abbotsleigh School hope these Student Engagement Workshops will open students’ eyes to the many career opportunities that exist when they leave year 12.
