Sydney Olympic Park

A world-class bespoke surfing facility

This new surfing facility within the heart of the Sydney Olympic Park precinct incorporates a 16,000m2 surf lagoon holding 26 million litres of water. The lagoon can create both a left- and right-hand breaks with waves surfable by beginners as well as pro surfers honing their skills.

The surf lagoon is designed to accommodate up to 84 surfers per hour and deliver up to 1,000 authentic surfing waves per hour, up to 2.1m in height and 10 seconds in duration.

Overlooking the lagoon is a multi-storey purpose-built facility split over three levels. The building is home to some amazing spaces such as the Surfing Academy, where beginners can learn to surf, the Fitness & Wellness Centre, a licensed restaurant and rooftop bar, a café, a hire and merchandise area, a kids’ play area and a splash pool. There is also a leisure pool with a heated hot tub.

The facility is supported by 136 parking spots. It is also within walking distance from Sydney Olympic Park Train Station.

Solar panels on the roof of the facility’s services building supplement the buildings’ power consumption.

Wave generation

The installation of WaveGarden wave generator technology into the URBNSURF lagoon provides over 16 wave variants, catering for all levels of surfing abilities.

Construction of this type of surf park project has never been undertaken before in Sydney. Design and construction of the lagoon base and wall structures were complex and required precise installation to allow for the forces of constant wave action. Working closely with the client and consultants was paramount in achieving this.
