Overview
Holding Cells Refurbishment
The project involved the refurbishment of 23 holding cells, the conversion of two existing cells into a staff amenities area and an Officer’s Post. The existing amenities were demolished to make way for a new ‘Sally Port’ or prisoner intake area.
A new security system – interfaced with the existing courthouse was installed along with air conditioning (heating) and new roofing.
The building is of heritage significance being built in 1892 and as such the works consisted of the old meeting the new. Care was taken to ensure that the fabric of the building remained above new ceilings and behind new wall finishes. The existing sandstone, ceramic bricks and cell-doors were maintained and cleaned as required by the heritage consultant.
