MLC SENIOR CENTRE BURWOOD ACHIEVES PRACTICAL COMPLETION 5 WEEKS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!

October 15, 2018

A huge achievement for the MLC Senior Centre Burwood team who were awarded Practical Completion on 15 October 2018, finishing five weeks ahead of schedule.

The project has been in design since 2012 and therefore it is an extremely rewarding result for the school and consultants to see their vision completed. The new senior centre is a highly innovative building that creates and encourages learning and can be compared to university buildings rather than a school. MLC School has also engaged Lipman for Stage 2 of the project which is a credit to everyone involved on the Stage 1 project.

The project involved the building of a new Senior School for years 7 to 12. The building spans over five levels starting with a basement mainly used for storage, plant rooms as well as dance studios, the ground floor consisting of class rooms, apple genius bar, reception area and open amphitheatre which can be viewed from each level through the void. The remaining three levels consist of a combination of teaching spaces, science laboratories, collaborative learning spaces, suspended pop out meeting rooms and an outdoor teaching balcony on level three.

The project has faced various challenges along the way. One of the biggest challenges of the project was the coordination of the services. There are no ceilings throughout the building and therefore service coordination was of the utmost importance to ensure an aesthetically pleasing as well as functioning building. The Senior Centre also has vast amounts of exposed off-form concrete which was a great concern throughout the project, however due to the great efforts of the project team along with our subcontractors, an excellent finish was achieved and the architects and the school are thrilled with the end result.  The project has a unique atmosphere screen panelling system on the façade which was another challenge for the project. As there is extremely limited space around the project, the screens ended up being individually assembled on the tennis courts across the road from the project and then swung around via the tower crane and fixed in place. The project team did a great job at doing this in a safe and efficient manner.

The MLC Senior school project is now one of the premier buildings in the Burwood Region. Its new and innovative design makes the building a cut above the rest.
